What is the difference between a personal trainer and a personal coach?

A personal trainer usually guides one side of your health: training. A personal coach covers all four building blocks: training, nutrition, lifestyle and sleep. Because most of the result happens outside the gym, in the structure of your week.

The short answer: a personal trainer stands next to you in the gym and guides your training. A personal coach looks at everything that shapes your health: your training, your nutrition, your lifestyle and your sleep, and adjusts all of it together every week.

In Belgium, neither title is protected. So always look at what the offer actually includes, not at the word on the website. To be upfront: I am a coach myself, so I have a stake here. That is why every claim comes with the study behind it.

A personal trainer: the training

In the classic role, everything revolves around the session itself: your technique, the weight on the barbell and a fixed appointment you do not skip. That works. A meta-analysis of twelve studies found that supervised training builds more strength than training alone, with a moderate effect of 0.40.

On body composition, the effect stayed at 0.07, close to nothing. That makes sense: how much fat you lose or muscle you build is largely decided outside the gym. A fixed coach does help you keep showing up. In a 2025 study, 88 percent of the supervised group followed the programme, against 52 percent of those who only received a pdf.

A personal coach: all four building blocks

Those one or two hours of training a week are the smallest part of the story. Most of the result comes from the other 166 hours: the structure of your week, what you eat, how you sleep and how you handle a busy day. That is what a coach builds with you, with a system that turns your lifestyle around step by step. So you no longer have to lean on willpower.

The research agrees. A meta-analysis of randomised trials with at least a year of follow-up found that programmes aimed only at physical activity produced on average 6.3 kilos less weight loss after 12 to 18 months than programmes combining activity and nutrition. An overview of 32 reviews reached the same conclusion in 2026 and added that results lasted longest with frequent, structured contact and supervised strength training. One caveat: many of those reviews were of low quality, and sleep was rarely included.

How to tell what someone really does

In Belgium, calling yourself a dietitian requires a recognised degree. No such rule exists for personal trainer or coach. There are trainers who also follow up your nutrition and coaches who never go beyond a programme. So ask three questions before you start:

What do you do with my nutrition? How do you follow up my sleep and my week? And what do you adjust on: numbers or gut feeling?

How I work

My approach is called De Bouwmethode. Training, nutrition, lifestyle and sleep sit in one system, built around your calendar. Every week we look at your numbers together: what you lifted, what you ate, how you slept and how your week went. We adjust on that basis, not on gut feeling.

Want to train together in the gym as well? That is possible as an add-on to the coaching. Read here how the coaching works. Mainly looking for what guidance costs? The full overview is at what a personal trainer costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a personal trainer and a personal coach?

A personal trainer usually guides your training in the gym. A personal coach guides training, nutrition, lifestyle and sleep together and adjusts them every week.

Is personal trainer or coach a protected title in Belgium?

No. Anyone can use both titles. So always ask what the guidance actually includes.

Do I need a personal trainer or a coach?

If your technique is what holds you back, a trainer helps. If you know what to do but keep getting stuck on your nutrition, your sleep or your week, you need a coach.

Can a coach also train with you in the gym?

Yes. Many coaches combine online follow-up with sessions in the gym. With me, that is possible as an add-on to the coaching.
